And what day would be complete...

...without a rant.

One that I've had before, too.

I made no new friends last night. There were a few horrified glances in my direction. All because I quite cheerfully mentioned that the best way to deal with trespassers on rail way lines... was to not stop the trains. Let the problem solve itself.

Lets be honest, if you've climbed over the barbed wire fences, and walked past the signs with the oh-so-subtle "DANGER OF DEATH" printed on them, to frolick about in front of 70mph+ trains between 25kV AC power lines, reasonable doubt as to your will to live must exist. We have a local prison, I'm sure there are inmates there that can clean up as part of their efforts to repay their debts to society once you've found a train you couldn't quite dodge quite quickly enough.

Motive escapes me. I assume crossing the track at a random point is a shortcut home for some, but certain organisms revel in causing disruption to others (filling a void, I guess, but I'll skip the psychoanalysis for now).

Either way, apparently playing frogger with idiots on train tracks in reprehensible. I beg to differ, and shall respectfully disagree.

Bloody BT Routers

One hour, twenty minutes and twelve seconds of my life I'll never see again, thanks very much BT.

A colleague of mine sent a client a firewall to replace his existing unit while we upgrade it. The replacement is identical in almost every aspect - barring its serial number, activation codes and mac addresses it's the same. Down to the branded RAM in it.
So, the client unplugs his firewall, plugs ours in. Outbound traffic only. No mail, no VPN clients. Puts his back, happy days are here again. Put mine back, no go. I've scrubbed the arp tables, introduced an intermediate switch, applied other devices to the external network - not a proverbial sausage. So, I put his firewall back in again - and up everything comes.

He has another router, that's his fun for tonight. I'm not touching that one again today. I'm going to go back to easy questions, like why a device incapable of bridging in its current config did exactly that.

Oh and I'm dabbling with Google+ too.

Mondays - I'm with Garfield

First day of the academic year - marvellous. The trains and streets are again packed with children joyous to be undertaking their studies again. Or, full of noisy little sods. Dealer's choice.

That's unfair, I suppose, I was always the quiet kid. Not so much now... still a kid, just not so quiet. Also, living in a (predominantly sports) university town I get lots of new people to run with, assuming they can keep up.

Work's shaping up to be a pain in the ass, seeing as teh electronic lock on the front doors is jammed shut (hooray magnets), but I;ve fixed it for now (hooray paperclips). Isn't technology fun?

Ah well, at least teh the first sales girl of the day into the office presented me with coffee, for which I am eternally grateful. Well, maybe not eternally - but at least until lunchtime.

Now... should I work, or should I spend more time researching migration to Australia... tricky one, that.
